Canary Technologies is a guest management system built for hotels: digital arrivals, guest messaging, upsells, tipping and checkout, wrapped in strong AI and fraud protection, and trusted by more than 20,000 hotels in over 125 countries. HolidayHero is a whole-stay platform for the entire lodging mix, where the guest journey from booking to review runs through one adaptive guest app, for hotels, holiday parks, hostels, aparthotels and rentals alike.
Where Canary is strong
Credit where it is due: Canary is one of the most decorated names in hotel tech, with repeated HotelTechAwards wins across check-in, messaging, upselling and fraud prevention, and marquee logos from Marriott to Four Seasons on its site. Its hotel-stack integration catalogue is deep, spanning the major PMSs, lock makers like Salto, Assa Abloy and Dormakaba, and the big payment providers, and its AI Voice agent for front-desk calls is a capability few rivals match. If you run a large branded hotel and want an arrival-to-departure toolkit with serious fraud protection, Canary has earned its reputation.
Why HolidayHero
The larger question is what you are buying: a set of hotel modules, or one platform that runs the whole stay.
One adaptive guest app, not a stack of modules. Canary organises the journey as separate products: Mobile Check-In, Guest Messaging, Digital Compendium, Dynamic Upsells, Smart Checkout. HolidayHero puts everything in a single guest app that adapts to the moment in time versus the reservation. Before arrival it leads with check-in and upgrades; during the stay it surfaces the itinerary, local experiences and smart-home controls; after checkout it shifts to reviews and rebooking. Operators create, sort and hide app sections per stage, guests and staff build a shared in-app itinerary, and local events flow straight into the app.
Built for your whole portfolio, not just hotels. Canary is hotel-first by design; it does offer a vacation-rentals edition, but the product, the case studies and the awards live in the hotel world. HolidayHero was built from day one for mixed portfolios: a boutique hotel, a holiday park and fifty apartments can run side by side, as multiple distinct brands from one account, each with its own look and its own domain. If your growth plan crosses property types, that ceiling matters.
Transparent pricing you can start on today. Canary's pricing page is quote-only: three bundles, each behind a "Get Quote" button and a sales conversation. HolidayHero publishes its pricing, from €6.50 per unit per month, and you can start on a free trial without ever booking a demo. Neither takes a commission on upsell revenue, which deserves a fair note: Canary explicitly advertises 0% commission on upsells too. The difference is that with HolidayHero you know the full cost before you talk to anyone.
Revenue that goes beyond add-ons. Both platforms do journey-timed upselling well. HolidayHero goes further on the local layer: a curated experiences and activities catalogue, guest inquiries routed directly to the suppliers who fulfil them, and automatic commission splits so the operator earns on every booking without playing middleman. Canary's catalogue centres on the hotel's own inventory (upgrades, late checkout, F&B); a local-experiences marketplace with supplier routing is not publicly documented.
Guest intelligence, not just guest messaging. Both offer a unified inbox, WhatsApp, OTA message sync and an AI concierge; Canary's channel list is genuinely broad, including LINE and WeChat. HolidayHero adds the layer above the inbox: guest sentiment detection during the stay, a composite 0 to 100 engagement score across five dimensions, and analytics on how guests actually use the app, so you catch an unhappy guest before checkout rather than in the review.
Open platform, EU-native data. HolidayHero offers a headless guest app you can embed in your own site or app, an integration API for system-to-system work, and the guest app on your own domain. It is GDPR-compliant with EU data residency, and operators own and can export their first-party guest data. Canary documents SOC 2 and PCI DSS v4 certification and compliance with regional data laws, which is solid, but EU data residency, guest-data export and a public developer API are not publicly documented. For registration filing, HolidayHero's Spain SES.Hospedajes integration is live and self-serve; Canary states it integrates with government agencies in certain markets, without listing them.
Beyond the door lock. Canary's Mobile Keys are excellent for hotel room access, with the major lock brands supported. HolidayHero's smart-device layer covers locks and then keeps going: thermostats, sensors, lighting, energy monitoring and more, with device visibility gated by reservation stage.
Capability by capability
The table above tells the detailed story. In short: on arrival basics, messaging, AI and upselling the two platforms are closer than you might expect, and Canary's hotel-stack integration breadth and AI Voice are real strengths. HolidayHero pulls ahead on the guest app itself (stages, itinerary, custom sections, own domain, headless), on the local revenue layer (experiences, supplier routing and splits), on guest intelligence (sentiment, engagement score) and on commercial openness (public pricing, free start, EU data residency, data export).
Which one fits you
If you run a large branded hotel, want front-desk call automation and fraud tooling, and are comfortable with a sales-led, quote-based purchase, Canary is a fine pick with a strong track record. For everyone else, and especially for operators who run more than hotels, want the guest experience on their own domain, want to earn on local experiences without doing the legwork, and prefer to see the price and start today, HolidayHero is built for exactly that: not another module on the stack, but the platform that runs the stay.
