HolidayHero vs Nonius

Nonius is a Portuguese hospitality technology group whose Mobile product sits alongside its TV, Wi-Fi, voice and signage systems. It suits hotels that want one supplier for the guest app and the hardware in the building. HolidayHero takes the other route: software only, AI-first, running the whole stay next to any PMS, for hotels, parks, hostels, aparthotels and rentals alike.

Nonius is a hospitality IT integrator, and its Mobile product is one line in a stack built around what gets installed in the building: TV, Wi-Fi, voice, digital signage and check-in kiosks. HolidayHero is a software-only whole-stay platform, where the guest app is one pillar of five and nothing depends on the hardware in the property.

What Nonius does well

The integration catalogue is the real thing: more than 200 pre-built connections, including 63 PMS and CRS systems, eight door-lock vendors, 13 payment gateways and seven room-control systems. Twenty-one years in, Nonius counts 5,900 hotels and sites across 118 countries, supported from 17 offices and a service-partner network. If you are fitting out a property and want the app, the TV, the network and the phones to land as one project with one supplier, few guest-app vendors can quote that the way Nonius can. Single sign-on with Google Workspace and Microsoft Entra ID is included on every package at no extra cost, which is more than most vendors this size offer.

Why HolidayHero

The whole stay, not a package tier. Nonius Mobile is sold in four levels: Essential from €70 a month, Plus from €100, Premium from €200 and Ultimate from €400. Online check-in appears at Premium. ID validation, in-app payments, self check-out and the mobile key appear only at Ultimate, and the mobile key needs the native app. HolidayHero does not carve the journey into tiers you unlock as you spend more. Check-in, ID capture, keys, messaging, upsells and the operator cockpit are one product, published from €6.50 per unit per month, and you can start for free without booking a sales call.

Any property type, not just hotels. Nonius sells to hotels, resorts and groups, and its other markets are maritime and healthcare. HolidayHero runs hotels, hotel groups, holiday parks, hostels, aparthotels and short-term rentals on the same platform, with separate brands and workspaces to keep a mixed portfolio clean. If you operate more than one kind of property, that difference usually decides the shortlist.

AI that does the work, not a FAQ bot. Nonius offers an AI chatbot as an add-on module: it answers common questions and emails staff when something needs a human. HolidayHero's AI is the centre of the product rather than a bolt-on. It answers across email, WhatsApp and SMS, recommends and books experiences, routes inquiries to the supplier who fulfils them, and escalates to a person with guardrails in place. Sentiment detection and a composite 0 to 100 engagement score across five dimensions tell you which guest needs attention before the review gets written.

Messaging as a channel, not an invitation. Nonius uses WhatsApp and SMS well for what it does with them: pre-arrival check-in invitations, with reminders that fire only for guests who have not finished. That is the documented scope. HolidayHero treats WhatsApp, email and SMS as one two-way inbox. Booking.com relay emails become chat threads, Airbnb scheduled messages are covered, PMS message threads sync in, and templates are gated by conditional rules evaluated at send time.

Revenue that pays the suppliers too. Both platforms sell activities in the app and both can charge to the room: Nonius through its POS and PMS integrations, HolidayHero through supported PMS. HolidayHero goes further down the chain. Inquiries land directly with the supplier in a supplier portal, and the split between operator, supplier and platform is calculated automatically, ex-VAT. No commission is taken on your own guests.

Compliance and data ownership. HolidayHero files guest registrations to SES.Hospedajes in Spain automatically, with batch submission, status tracking and error alerts. Guest data stays the operator's: exportable, EU-hosted, never monetised. Nonius maps check-in data into the PMS and CRM, which is the right first step, but automatic authority filing is not publicly documented.

Built to be built on. HolidayHero ships an integration API and a headless guest app, so a group can run the guest experience inside its own app or website with HolidayHero as the engine underneath. Nonius describes integration adapters and modern APIs and offers bespoke work through its Custom Development team, but there is no public developer documentation, so extending it is a project with a quote attached rather than something your own developers can pick up.

Capability by capability

Parity is real in places and worth saying plainly. Both do online check-in with ID capture and PMS write-back. Both ship a branded guest app with a city guide, maps and bookable activities. Both post charges to the room, run multi-property, and handle payments through certified gateways with tokenised cards. Both put room control in the guest's hand, Nonius through room-control system vendors, HolidayHero through its own smart-device layer that covers lighting, climate, sensors and energy alongside locks.

The differences cluster on either side. HolidayHero adds the operator's own domain, an itinerary that guests and staff both build, auto-translation across the app and the messages, sentiment and engagement scoring, event-driven automations, supplier commission splits, multiple brands from one account and a headless front end. Nonius adds the building: TV, Wi-Fi, voice and signage from the same supplier, a check-in kiosk with instant key pickup, and an integration catalogue several times the size.

Which fits you

If you are fitting out a hotel and want one vendor to deliver the TV, the network, the phones and the guest app as a single project, Nonius is a strong pick. The integration list and two decades of installs are hard to argue with, and that is exactly what a fit-out needs.

If the guest experience is the project, HolidayHero fits better: one platform across every property type, AI that handles messages and upsells instead of deflecting them, supplier economics that work for everyone in the chain, published pricing you can start on today, and no dependency on whatever hardware happens to be in the building.
