HolidayHero vs Operto

Operto is a hospitality operations suite trusted by 20,000+ operators, strongest in smart-lock access, guest verification and housekeeping automation. HolidayHero starts from the other end: the guest's whole stay, with messaging, upsells, experiences and smart home in one platform beside any PMS. The real difference is scope, AI and how you buy.

Operto is an operations-first hospitality suite built around guest access, verification and housekeeping: smart locks and mobile keys, task scheduling for cleaning teams, and a digital guest layer with guidebooks and upsells on top. HolidayHero is a whole-stay guest platform: everything between booking and review, from online check-in and messaging to upsells, local experiences and smart home, in one system that runs beside any PMS.

Where Operto is strong

Credit where it is due: Operto's access stack is deep. Smart locks, mobile keys, time-bound codes, BLE lock upgrades and verification-gated entry are well documented, its guest verification adds biometric ID scanning and facial recognition, and Operto Teams is a full housekeeping and maintenance product with scheduling, checklists and payroll tracking. If your single biggest problem is doors and cleaning rosters, Operto has earned its 20,000+ operator base.

Why HolidayHero

HolidayHero's bet is that the stay itself, not the lock or the cleaning schedule, is the thing worth owning. That shows up in several places where the two platforms differ.

The guest journey is the product, not a layer. HolidayHero's guest app adapts to the moment in time: reservation stages control what guests see before arrival, in-stay and after, guests and operators build a shared in-app itinerary, and operators create, sort and hide their own app sections on their own domain, in the guest's own language via auto-translation. Operto documents staged messages and staged upsells, but a stage-aware app, itineraries, custom sections, custom domains and auto-translation are not publicly documented.

Messaging that meets guests where they are. HolidayHero runs one inbox across email, WhatsApp and SMS, with Booking.com and Airbnb threads and PMS guest messages synced in, and an AI concierge that answers and actions guest messages autonomously with human guardrails. Operto's messaging covers SMS, email and in-app with scheduling and two-way replies, which works, but WhatsApp, OTA inbox sync and an AI that handles guest conversations are not publicly documented. Operto's AI product, Operto ONE, points at a different problem entirely: protecting hotels' branded Google search from predatory OTAs. Useful, but it does not talk to your guests.

Revenue with the plumbing included. Both platforms sell upsells in the guest app. HolidayHero adds what happens after the click: charges post to the folio via supported PMS, a curated local-experiences catalogue sits alongside operational upsells, and inquiries route straight to the supplier who fulfils them, with the commission split calculated automatically. None of that supplier and settlement layer is publicly documented on Operto's side; its local content takes the form of curated recommendations and upsell add-ons.

Intelligence about guests, not just tasks. HolidayHero turns guest data into guest-app analytics, sentiment detection and a composite 0–100 engagement score, so you catch an unhappy guest before checkout rather than in the review. Operto documents upsell analytics and a guest satisfaction metric (G-CSAT) plus feedback capture, a solid base, but sentiment detection and engagement scoring are not publicly documented.

How you buy. HolidayHero publishes its pricing (from €6.50 per unit per month), starts with a free self-serve trial, and takes no commission on your own guests. Operto's pricing is quote-only: the pricing page is a form to book a call. If you want to know the cost before talking to sales, only one of these two will tell you.

Built for a European operator. HolidayHero is EU-native, GDPR-compliant with EU data residency, files guest registration with Spanish authorities (SES Hospedajes) automatically, and gives operators ownership and export of their first-party guest data. Operto claims GDPR and PCI compliance; EU data residency, authority registration and data-export commitments are not publicly documented.

Open by design. HolidayHero exposes an integration API and a headless guest app, so you can run the guest experience inside your own app or site. Operto integrates broadly (150+ third-party solutions, 50+ PMS including hotel systems like Oracle Opera and Mews, plus a large lock and device network) and that breadth is real, but a public developer API and a headless option are not publicly documented.

Capability by capability

The table above scores 42 capabilities across eight categories. In short: the two platforms are at parity on arrival basics (online check-in, ID capture, smart locks), guidebooks, upsell catalogues, dashboards, PMS-agnostic architecture, integration breadth, multi-property support and PCI. Operto's ID verification is notably deep, with biometric scanning and facial recognition. HolidayHero leads across the guest app (stages, itinerary, custom sections, domains, languages), messaging (WhatsApp, OTA and PMS inbox sync, AI concierge), the revenue chain (folio posting, supplier splits and routing, experiences), guest intelligence (sentiment, engagement score) and the commercial model (public pricing, self-serve start, no guest commission). Where Operto shows no flag on a whole category, read it as focus: Operto is built to run access and operations, so much of the guest-journey and revenue plumbing sits outside its scope.

Which fits you

If your pain is concentrated in doors and housekeeping, keys, codes, cleaner scheduling and maintenance tracking, Operto is a fine pick with a strong track record. For everyone whose ambition is the stay itself, guests who check in online, message on WhatsApp, book experiences, and come back direct, HolidayHero gives you the whole journey in one platform, beside whatever PMS you already run, at a price you can read on the website today.
